Links to other family history and genealogy sites
I am a member of several genealogy societies both in the UK and overseas:
Guild of One-Name Studies (my one-name study is for surname TEDEN)
I have an annual subsciption to Ancestry.co.uk's UK & Ireland collection and find this invaluable in seeking out ancestors in all censuses for England & Wales from 1841-1901, plus Pallot's Baptism & Marriage collectiosn (pre 1837 when registration began). It's not cheap, but I find it worth doing.
The website of the Church of the Latter-Day Saints is absolutely invaluable to any budding family historian as it has a comprehensive worldwide database of births and christenings, marriages and deaths, plus searchable versions of the 1880 US census, the 1881 British census and the 1881 Canadian census.
Rootsweb has various pages which will be of use. My favourites are:
Free access to the birth, marriage and death indices for the UK from 1837 onwards, and http://lists.rootsweb.com, which is the homepage of the various mailing lists available through Rootsweb, these include surname lists and regional lists and can be a mine of helpful information (and helpful people).
If you cannot find what you are looking for on Rootsweb's FreeBMD, you can pay to search the indices through www.findmypast.co.uk - however if you are not sure exactly what year/quarter, this can quickly become expensive. If you buy a subscription, it might be more affordable - they also have access to censuses 1841-1911 (the only site with the 1911 census).
You should also check out http://freecen.rootsweb.com (free of charge and limited at present, this is growing all the time).
Cyndi's List is devoted to providing links to other useful genealogy sites and is incredibly comprehensive.
